Finding My Voice as a Transfer Student
Starting college is a big transition, and like many students, I hoped to find my place right away. I began my journey at James Madison University, where I was excited but quickly realized the environment did not quite fit who I was or where I wanted to go. Although it was challenging to admit, I knew I needed a change. Transferring was not an easy decision, but it was the first step in learning how to trust and advocate for myself.
Coming to Virginia Commonwealth University felt like a fresh start. I was determined to do things differently, to be more involved, more intentional and more open to new opportunities. This mindset led me to the VCUarts Fashion Department where I found a space that truly felt like home.
As a Fashion Merchandising student at VCU, I found countless opportunities to challenge myself and grow. Alongside a group of friends, I co-founded Vintage Threads, a student organization that appreciates vintage fashion.
As President, I led initiatives that connected students with other fashion clubs at VCU and built partnerships with small businesses throughout the Richmond community. I have also volunteered across various areas of the fashion department and participated in the fashion event planning class, which is responsible for producing the annual VCUarts fashion show. These hands-on experiences have deepened my passion for fashion and taught me the importance of collaboration.
Looking back, transferring to VCU was one of the best decisions that I have made. It taught me how important it is to find an environment that aligns with your values and interests. This is something that I have carried with me into the workplace as well. Most importantly, it gave me the courage to find my voice and develop my personal style. I have built meaningful relationships with both professors and classmates and I truly value and will cherish the time that I have spent at VCU.
