More Than Just Shelves
Have you ever walked into a store and been instantly pulled toward a product you never planned to buy? That is the power of visual merchandising. Most people think visual merchandising is just making things "look pretty". However, it is so much more than just aesthetics. It’s about telling a story that connects with the customer and subtly guides their experience from the moment they walk in. Every display has a purpose. Every products placement is intentional.
As a visual merchandiser, planograms are always my starting point. They are the layout maps that guide where and how everything should be placed. However, creating one is not just about making things look good, it is about being intentional.
I think about what catches the customer's eye first, how they move through the space, and how each section makes them feel. I consider which pieces should be faced out to sell best, how to highlight key merchandise, and even how to build outfits unintentionally. It takes product knowledge and an understanding of the customer market to bring it all together in a way that feel natural.
Once the planogram is finalized, I lead the team in transforming the space to match the vision. I have had the opportunity to lead five floorsets each month, and each one comes with its own set of challenges. Sometimes that means adjusting or replacing hardware or pivoting when certain merchandise doesn't arrive. Floorsets usually need to be completed by a specific time, so time management is crucial. Leading a team in these moments means staying calm, clear, and collaborative. I have learned how to communicate the vision while staying flexible, making quick decisions on the floor, and keeping the team motivated.
Visual merchandising isn’t just about the product, it’s about the experience, and being able to shape that experience each time. I have learned how to think strategically, intentionally, and lead with confidence.
